A lively outdoor camp scene showing a group of Union officers posed before a field tent, several seated in the foreground and others standing behind, all in uniform with shoulder straps prominently visible. The officer standing at rear right, casually holding a cigar in his mouth, is identified in pencil on the verso as Lt. Thompson and appears to be the same man pictured in a comparable view reproduced in Image of War, Vol. IV, p. 282. The setting and informal pose give the image particular charm as a wartime study of officers in camp rather than in the studio.
