A wonderful association copy presented by Medal of Honor recipient William Knight (1837-1916), one of the soldiers who participated in the Great Locomotive Chase. In April 1862, a group of volunteers led by civilian scout James J. Andrews penetrated 200 miles south into Confederate territory and commandeered the locomotive The General. Driving it north to Chattanooga, they destroyed bridges and other infrastructure on the Western and Atlantic Railroad line between Atlanta and Chattanooga as they went.
Notably, the survivors of the raid, including Knight, were the first recipients of the newly created Medal of Honor presented in September 1863.
The copy is presented to Samuel A. Justice (1839-1923), who served for the first 90 days of the 21st Ohio Infantry with William Knight in the earliest days of the war. Justice would re-enlist in 1863 in Company I of the 125th Ohio Infantry. Knight served in the 21st Ohio for the full three-year enlistment and in 1863 joined Company I of the 125th Infantry, mustering out at the end of the war in Texas.
