Full-length studio albumen CDV. Lebanon, Pennsylvania: J. Daily, Artist, Excelsior Gallery, [ca. 1863]. Recto bears an ornate double-border mount. Verso features a faint period pencil signature: "Yours Truly, Charles Marquette / Co. F. 93. Regt PA." accompanied by a later collector's pencil identification: "Charles D. Marquette MOH."
A native of Lebanon County, Marquette earned the nation's highest military honor for his conspicuous bravery during the Battle of Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863. While the regiment was engaged in heavy fighting at Salem Church, the color bearer was shot down. Marquette rushed forward under a devastating fire, recovered the fallen colors and successfully defended them, ensuring the regiment's standard did not fall into enemy hands. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for this act of "distinguished gallantry."
The carte itself is a crisp, local-backmarked image from Marquette’s hometown of Lebanon. He is depicted in a jaunty, crossed-leg pose, resting one hand on a Victorian studio chair. He wears a shell jacket and light-colored trousers, holding his forage cap in his left hand. Notably, a small pin or badge is visible on his breast, possibly a regimental or company identification. This study captures Marquette as a young volunteer, likely taken shortly after his enlistment or during a return home following his heroic actions in the field.
Following the war, Marquette remained deeply devoted to his comrades' memory, eventually designing the 93rd Pennsylvania’s monument that stands today on the Gettysburg battlefield.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, Tintypes, Cased Images, Union Cases, Albumen Photographs, CDVs, Carte de Visites, Cartes de Visite, Carte-de-visite, Cartes-de-visite, CDV, Cabinet Cards, Stereoviews, Stereocards]
Strong tonal depth and clarity for a locally produced image. The mount shows typical age-related edge wear and toning. The period ink signature, while light, remains legible and provides essential primary-source identification. A highly desirable signed specimen of a VI Corps Medal of Honor recipient.
