Indoor studio view albumen on cardstock. Maryland: H. Moltz, ca.1860s. 9 in. x 10 1/2 in.

A full-length view of Captain William H. Mathews in a full Union Army officer's uniform. Mathews stands in a studio setting beside a small round table with books, wearing a dark, single-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps, a carefully hand-tinted sash, and military cap.

Capt. William H. Mathews (1844-1928) mustered into Company E of the Maryland 2nd Infantry on 23 July 1861, and was mustered out on 17 July 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia. Over the course of his service, he rose through the ranks from corporal and sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, and finally to Captain. Mathews was wounded three times in battle: at Second Bull Run on 29 August 1862, and twice at Petersburg on 17 and 30 July 1864. He subsequently received the Medal of Honor for his actions in Petersburg, where he captured a sergeant and two soldiers of the 17th South Carolina Infantry.
