M1860 light cavalry saber. Chicopee, Massachusetts: Ames Manufacturing Company, n.d. Overall approx. 42 in., blade approx. 35 in. long.

Provenance: Frederick "Frank" Logan

A high grade example of the classic Civil War edged weapon, complete with a shagreen grip, gold-gilt guard, blade acid-etched and engraved to each side, and engraved scabbard mounts. Along with depictions of weapons, musical instruments, cannons, and botanical symbols to both sides, the blade is etched to its obverse: "Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.," with a Federal Shield, a Federal Eagle and a ribband reading "E. Pluribus Unum," and to its reverse with a large "U.S." Accompanied by a gold bullion sword knot.

The sword is in overall very fine condition, with a clean blade, significant gold gilding retained to the guard, and the original shagreen grip with its gilt brass wire wrap intact. Where the gilding has worn away, the brass elements have taken on a dark, cool patina with subtle traces of verdigris.

From the collection of Frederick "Frank" Logan. Frank Logan was a dedicated Civil War enthusiast and respected member of the collecting community. He began his lifelong passion for Civil War history as a relic hunter in the mid-1970s. Over the decades, that early interest grew into a deep passion for all aspects of the Civil War, with his collecting efforts eventually centering on Maryland-related artifacts and material culture.

A member of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association, he was well regarded among fellow collectors for his knowledge and appreciation of historical artifacts. Carefully assembled over many years, his collection reflects decades of searching, study, and a genuine dedication to preserving pieces of American Civil War history.
