M1840 heavy cavalry sword. Cabotville, Massachusetts: N.P. Ames, 1845. Ricasso stamped: "N.P. Ames / Cabotville / 1845." Ricasso reverse stamped with "US / JH." Pommel cap stamps faded. Blade approx. 36 in., overall approx. 41 in.
Complete in scabbard. The blade exhibits an incredibly reflective gray tone. The scabbard shows significant tarnishing, but protects the blade wonderfully. The guard exhibits some tarnishing, as does the wiring on the grip. The leather on the grip remains in good condition, with only a little chip.
Known informally as "Wristbreakers," Model 1840 cavalry sabers were used during the Mexican-American War and saw continued popularity throughout the Civil War despite the introduction of their replacement, the M1860 light cavalry saber.
