A. Cleveland Coxe. Thoughts on the Services: Designed as an Introduction to the Liturgy, and an Aid to its Devout Use. Baltimore: Joseph Robinson and New York: D.Dana, Jr., 1859.

Provenance: Alexander "Sandie" Swift Pendleton (inscription to flyleaf).

8vo. Original morocco boards. Missing leather on spine. SECOND EDITION.

A copy of Thoughts on the Services by Bishop Arthur Cleveland Coxe (1818-1896). Inscribed to Alexander "Sandie" Swift Pendleton (1840-1864) by his sister, Mary, on his 21st birthday.

Sandie Pendleton was born to Episcopal priest and future Confederate general, William N. Pendleton. When he was 13, Sandie and his family moved to Lexington, Virginia, since his father got a job at a nearby parish; because he was a minister's son, Sandie could also attend Washington College for free. Before his graduation in 1857, Sandie met Maj. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson through a literary society. He applied for a master's degree in 1859 at the University of Virginia but never got the chance to complete it due to the Civil War beginning in his second year. Sandie tried to defer his draft date to finish his degree but was denied by the government, eventually leaving for Harpers Ferry on 11 June 1861.

At Harpers Ferry, Stonewall Jackson requested Sandie to be his ordinance officer; he showed valor at the First Battle of Bull Run and served with distinction during the Valley Campaign. After serving by Jackson's side during the bloody Battle of Antietam, Sandie was promoted to adjutant general. He stayed with Jackson until the general's death at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Under the Second Corps's new commanders, Sandie was present during the Gettysburg Campaign and eventually assumed the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Unfortunately, during the Third Battle of Winchester, at Fisher's Hill, Sandie was fatally wounded by a shot in the abdomen on 22 September 1864. He was taken to a nearby town and died the next day. He was initially buried near the battlefield but was eventually exhumed and returned to his family.
