Outdoor candid albumen CDV of Professor Lowe in his balloon. Mathew Brady, May 1862. Framed to 8 7/8 x 7 3/8 in.
A nicely framed original CDV photograph of Professor Lowe observing the Battle of Fair Oaks from his balloon, taken by Mathew Brady in May 1862.
Lowe and his "Balloon Corps" provided intelligence regarding Confederate troops stationed in the area of Arlington, Virginia. While clever, the ultimate value of his spy missions was hotly debated. However, his balloons made for quite the show and were often shot at by Rebel soldiers. Lowe's innovation captured the Northern public's imagination, leading enterprising photographers like Brady to drag their cameras out to document their flights.
While many images of Lowe's balloons were made, examples are tough to come by.
