General Orders, No. 14. Headquarters Northern Division of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 19 April 1865. Signed by 1st Lt. W.H. Gladwin, 1st Texas Cavalry. Signed in type by Maj. General Herron and Assistant Adjutant General Capt. William H. Clapp. 1 page, approx. 5 x 8 in.
An order featuring mourning borders issued by Major General Francis J. Herron from Baton Rouge in response to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The first half memorializes the president in poetic language: "The Nation mourns! Abraham Lincoln, late President of the United States, is dead! He fell by the ruthless hand of an assassin, just as his labors were being crowned with success. The whole civilized world will mourn his loss."
Herron goes on to order that "no public business will be transacted this day...and the Major General Commanding, requests all good citizens, to take such measures to show their respect for the memory of the late President as they may deem fitting and proper."
Interestingly, though issued by Union General Herron, the order is signed by William H. Gladwin, 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 1st Texas Cavalry.
