Large-format oval albumen studio portrait. N.p.: n.p., ca 1862-1865. Housed under original domed/curved glass within an elaborate period oval carved and gilt gesso frame. Oval mat border features fine concentric decorative ruled framing lines around the central aperture. Frame approx. 12 1/4 x 14 in. 

The portrait captures a distinguished, bearded Union naval officer seated in half-length profile. He is attired in a double-breasted naval frock coat bearing two rows of gilt eagle-and-anchor buttons arranged in pairs, denoting the rank of Lieutenant Commander (or Commander). His shoulder strap insignia clearly displays a foul anchor flanked by rank devices. In his left hand, the officer proudly grips the hilt of a Model 1852 Naval Officer's Sword, displaying its distinctive cast brass basket guard with dolphin terminal and eagle crest, along with the ray skin grip and sword knot.

Large-format display albumen photographs of Civil War naval officers are significantly scarcer than standard carte-de-visite portraits. The prominent display of the regulation Model 1852 naval sword, combined with the sharp resolution of the uniform embroidery, shoulder straps, and facial features, makes this an exceptionally handsome presentation piece from the Union blockade fleet. Given the man's senior rank, identification is possible with further research.

Very good. The albumen print displays rich sepia tones, sharp focal clarity, and strong contrast throughout. The mount exhibits light, even toning and mild foxing spots along the wide margins. The ornate gilt frame remains structurally intact with its original deep luster, showing expected light age cracking along the perimeter floral elements.
