Confederate cavalry saber, loosely patterned after the United States m1840 cavalry saber, in a Leech and Rigdon scabbard. North Carolina: Louis Froelich, n.d. Overall approx. 42 1/4 in., blade approx. 35 1/4 in. long.
These distinct Confederate edged weapons are known in collecting circles as "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" sabers. This is specifically a Type II or Second Model Kenansville saber. Produced by Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich, the swords are immediately recognizable by their pointed oval counterguards marked with Roman numeral bench numbers, smooth, unassuming pommels, and knucklebows that branch at two distinct points. This example is numbered "XXXX" to the guard.
Paired with a perfectly-fitting, high-quality brass-mounted scabbard by Confederate manufacturers Leech & Rigdon. The scabbard is in very fine condition, with a neatly lapped seam. The even patina between the sword and scabbard suggests they have been paired for a long time, potentially as far back as the war.
The blade has never been sharpened and exhibits a pleasing patina. The sand-cast brass hilt features the casting flaws common in Confederate-manufactured weapons, with the exterior knucklebow slightly deformed, and the original dyed pigskin over wood grip and single wire wrap are in fine shape.
