Document signed on behalf of Maj. Gen. George Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac. [Washington, D.C.], 15 July 1863. 1 page, 8to. Inscription in ink identifying the document to recto left.

A document listing the countersigns used in the Army of the Potomac from 14 July-20 July 1863. Some of the countersigns included on this list were "Cork", "Providence" and "Franklin".

When these countersigns were assigned, George Meade had just taken command of the Army of the Potomac only a few weeks prior, right on the eve of the Battle of Gettysburg. After successfully winning the Battle of Gettysburg, albeit suffering significant casualties, it's no wonder Meade was eager to provide several countersigns for the upcoming days, lest the Confederates try to gain any possible advantage.
