1864 WARTIME DOCUMENT SIGNED BOLDLY BY CONFEDERATE PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS.
Manuscript document signed by Jefferson Davis, as President of the Confederate States of America. CSA Executive Department, Richmond, [Virginia], 13 June 1864. 1 page, 4to, 7 7/8 x 10 in.
Sent to the Confederate Senate, the document reads in full: "Agreeably to the recommendation of the Secretary of War, I nominate the officers on the accompanying list, to the rank affixed to their names respectively.
Davis boldly signed the document, written secretarily, and has also supplied the number "13" for the date.
Attached is a manuscript document (also secretarial) recommending six Floridian officers of the newly formed 10th and 11th Florida Infantries for promotion. The 10th Florida Regiment was formed by consolidating 4 companies with the 1st Florida Battalion, and the 11th was formed by consolidating 3 companies with the 4th Florida Battalion.
The officers listed include: Lt. Col. C.F. Hopkins (1825-1897) of Florida to be Colonel of the 10th Florida Regiment; Lt. Col. Theo. W. Brevard (1835-1892) of Florida, to be Colonel of the 11th Florida Regiment; Major W.W. Scott of Florida to be Lt. Col. of the 10th Florida Regiment; Major J.F. McClelland to be Lt. Col. of the 11th Florida Regiment; Captain John Westcott to Major of the 10th; and Capt. John H. Gee to Major of the 11th Florida. All with rank as of 11 June 1864.
RIBBON TIED WITH Manuscript document signed by James Seddon (1814-1880), as Confederate Secretary of War. CSA War Department, Richmond, [Virginia], 13 June 1864. 2 pages, folio, 7 3/4 x 12 3/8 in.
ALSO WITH after Alonzo Chappel (1828-1887). Portrait of Jefferson Davis. Engraving. New York: Johnson, Fry & Co., 1866. Image 5 1/2 x 7 1/4 in., sheet 7 3/4 x 11 1/8 in.
Shortly after the passage of these promotions, the 10th and 11th Florida Infantries joined the Siege of Petersburg, fighting at the Battle of Weldon Railroad (alt. Battle of Globe Tavern), where the brigade unsuccessfully assaulted a Federal position along the railroad. Colonel Theodore Brevard's brother, Lt. Mays Brevard, was killed in action at the Yankee breastworks.
They saw more action in 1865, fighting at the Battle of Hatcher's Run (alt. Battle of Dabney's Mill). On March 20th, Col. Brevard took command of the Florida Brigade as the senior colonel after Brig. General Joseph Finegan returned to Florida. As the Federal noose tightened, they arrived at Sayler's Creek on April 6th. The 11th Florida was detached to guard a crossroads but was captured, including Col. Brevard. Those left of the two regiments surrendered at Appomattox Court House 3 days later.
An excellent Confederate document for the Florida collector with a fine Jefferson Davis signature.
