Civil War Inscribed Bowie Knife and Personal Folding Cutlery Set belonging to Captain William Pray, Company I, 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, ca. 1862.

Rare, highly desirable personal campaign cutlery group owned by Captain William Pray of the 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The ensemble centers around a Sheffield-made presentation Bowie knife featuring smooth bone handle scales profusely scrimshaw-inscribed on one side in formal script: "Capt. Wm. Pray / 29th MS. Inf." flanked by engraved Union national shield motifs. The dual-guarded Bowie knife features a clip-point steel blade stamped at the ricasso: "MANHATTAN / CUTLERY COMPY / SHEFFIELD." It is accompanied by its original gold-embossed leather scabbard with a nickel-silver throat mount.

Accompanying the Bowie knife are Captain Pray's companion folding campaign fork and spoon. Both eating utensils feature matching bone handle scales set with silver escutcheon shields engraved with his script initials "WP". Designed for field campaign utility, both utensils fold compactly into their respective handles for pocket transport.

Captain William Pray served as commander of Company I, 29th Massachusetts Infantry, leading his men through heavy early-war field operations in Virginia, where he was wounded in action during the Seven Days Battles in the summer of 1862. Identified personal gear carried by named Union officers, particularly featuring carved presentation knives with matching campaign mess gear, are highly desirable artifacts of "a soldier's life" that have been popular with early militaria collectors since the genesis of the hobby. This is a fine set, tailor-made for display. 

The knife blade exhibits a dark, untouched aged patina with minor light pitting and expected surface wear, while the scrimshaw inscription on the bone handle remains remarkably crisp, deep, and fully legible. The original scabbard shows light surface rub and edge wear consistent with field carry. The folding fork and spoon function smoothly, retaining fine polish and tight rivets throughout.
