A lengthy history by Confederate veteran and Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans, Kentuckian Bennett H. Young (1843-1919). As a teenager, he enlisted with the 8th Kentucky Cavalry (Confederate), becoming a part of John Hunt Morgan's cavalry.
Yount participated in Morgan's Raid but was captured and fled to Canada. From there, he led St. Alban's Raid, the northernmost land action during the War. They aimed to rob banks and divert Union attention to defend the border with Canada. While they did rob a bank, killing a local in the process, and escape across the border, they did not trick Federal command, however. They were arrested by Canadian authorities but ultimately pardoned. Speculating that Britain might enter the conflict, Confederate gold bonds temporarily increased. The Canadian response was icy, nonetheless, as they felt they were being drawn into the War without their consent.
Nevins notes that this work is "a necessary source for any study of Confederate cavalry operations in Kentucky and Tennessee."
