Silver official badge of the Twelfth (XII) Army Corps, Department of the Cumberland. N.p., ca. 1863. As the 28th Penn. were a part of the corps's Second Division, the badge lacks colored enamel. Suspended from an unengraved rounded name bar with original pin to its reverse, missing loop. The badge has been engraved "28" to a circular device at its center, around which is engraved "Sergt. Jas. F. Knight / Co. F. P.V." Approx. 2 1/2 x 3 in. With printed illustration featuring Civil War motifs and the label "Union States," framed to 9 3/4 x 13 3/4 in.
Provenance: Frederick "Frank" Logan Collection
The names of two battle locations are engraved to each arm of the star, totaling ten. Starting with the top point and moving clockwise, they are as follows: "Bolivar / Cedar Mountain / Rappahannock / Antietam / Chancellorsville / Gettysburg / Wauhatchie / Look-out Mt. / Mission Ridge / Ringgold."
James F. Knight mustered into Company F of the 28th Pennsylvania as a private on 6 July 1861 in Allegheny County, Philadelphia. Within just a few months, Knight participated in his first battle at Bolivar Heights, as noted on the pin. In September 1862, the 28th would be assigned to the Twelfth Corps, Army of the Potomac, and would remain with the corps through its attachment to the Department of the Cumberland in September 1863 and its combination with the Eleventh (XI) Corps, Department of the Cumberland, into the Twentieth (XX) Corps in April 1864. The last chronological battle to appear to the badge, the Battle of Ringgold Gap fought on 27 November 1863, indicates that Knight acquired it while serving in the Department of the Cumberland. He was promoted to second lieutenant on 10 June 1864 and to captain on 21 April 1865 and would be discharged just two months later on 29 June.
A finely engraved corps badge, identified to a well-fought soldier.
From the collection of Frederick "Frank" Logan. Frank Logan was a dedicated Civil War enthusiast and respected member of the collecting community. He began his lifelong passion for Civil War history as a relic hunter in the mid-1970s. Over the decades, that early interest grew into a deep passion for all aspects of the Civil War, with his collecting efforts eventually centering on Maryland-related artifacts and material culture.
A member of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association, he was well regarded among fellow collectors for his knowledge and appreciation of historical artifacts. Carefully assembled over many years, his collection reflects decades of searching, study, and a genuine dedication to preserving pieces of American Civil War history.
