A fine item carved and used by Sergeant William G. Sallee (1836-1880). Sallee enlisted as a private into Company H of the 9th Iowa Infantry on 21 August 1861. He was promoted to sergeant on 2 February 1863 before obtaining an injury and mustering out of service nearly a month later. He re-enlisted 23 January 1864, where he would remain in service until the end of the war.
A wonderful artifact from a veteran who experienced the expanse of the war throughout his service.
