An original albumen carte-de-visite portrait depicting Augustus Henry Heath standing in civilian attire, proudly posing alongside a large, fringed Union national combat color. The flag features a highly desirable, custom painted or embroidered eagle design centered within the star canton, with the stripes draping elegantly behind him. The lower front margin carries the letterpress studio credit for Allen, 13 Winter St. (Boston, MA). The reverse bears a clear pencil inscription reading "Augustus Heath."

This exceptional portrait depicts Augustus Henry Heath (1823–1892), a prominent Boston dry goods merchant, civic leader, and dedicated wartime philanthropist. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Heath operated successful mercantile businesses on Main Street and later Federal Street in Boston. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Heath bypassed standard military enlistment to focus his efforts on the critical, early-war medical crisis. He was instrumental in organizing and forming a specialized volunteer hospital corps to care for the flood of wounded soldiers returning from the frontlines. Deeply committed to the cause, Heath traveled to the theater of war himself and expended a considerable amount of his personal fortune to procure supplies, medical comforts, and direct care for the injured.

The flag Heath presents is a magnificent visual testament to his service: a stunning national color featuring a custom eagle-in-canton configuration. Given his role as a wealthy benefactor and creator of a hospital corps, this flag likely represents the specialized standard of his volunteer organization or a presentation flag gifted by grateful recovery wards. Produced by Edward L. Allen's high-end studio on Winter Street in Boston, this image captures the elite tier of northern civilian commitment, where personal wealth and organizational talent were volunteered to save lives in the wake of the era's bloodiest battles.

Very good. The albumen print retains pleasing, warm tones and sharp definition. The mount is crisp and structurally sound with straight edges.
