A fantastic collection of wartime and veteran artifacts of Lewis Bardeen of Company G, 22nd New York Cavalry. Handsomely presented in a modern shadowbox 17 9/16" x 21 3/8". Shadowbox contents include:

3. Four (4) albumen CDV portraits framed with three (3) textile fragments, possibly from an American or regimental flag, in red, white, and blue. The far-right portrait is identified by ink inscription to recto as "Jas. Bond." Jason Bond served in Company A, 22nd New York Cavalry.

4. GAR 2-piece badge with American flag ribbon.

5. GAR 2-piece canteen-shaped badge.

6. Bone ring tied with a pink ribbon, lock of hair, and newspaper clipping, framed together.

7. Bullet remnant in cylindrical housing.

8. Regulation waist belt plate.

9. Eleven (11) General Service Eagle buttons.

10. Small book, almost certainly a Bible, New Testament, or prayer book.

11. Watch chain with disk-shaped fob.

12. Wooden box with sliding lid. 7 3/4" x 4 1/2" x 3". Contents include a hand-drawn embroidery pattern, a punched paper needlework bookmark, an illustrated trade card for Lewiston Mills of Lewiston, Maine., and a modern color copy of the CDV of Lewis Bardeen.

Lewis Bardeen was just 16 years old on 30 November 1863 when he enlisted as a private into Company G of the 22nd New York Cavalry. The company left the state after organization in early March 1864 and quickly saw heavy action while participating in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Ream's Station. The latter battle saw the capture of many of the company's men, including its colonel. Later that year, they joined Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, fighting at Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek. In the final year of the war they were stationed in western Virginia and continued operations in the Shenandoah. Bardeen was mustered out with the regiment at Winchester, Virginia on 1 August 1865.

The lovely assemblage includes both wartime and early veteran-period artifacts from Bardeen. The highlight is Bardeen's pipe, which is decoratively carved with his initials, regiment, and corps information. An excellent collection.
