Full-sized soldier’s cot, filled with hay, structured with wooden poles. Four (4) original leather ties run along the seam. Total length 78 3/4 in. Maker’s imprint stamped to bag: “Bazar Du Voyage / Paris.”

Robert Hale Ives Goddard enlisted in 1861, mustering into Company C of the 1st Rhode Island Infantry on 2 May 1861. He mustered out on 2 August of that year, but returned to service on 20 September 1862, when he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers as aide-de-camp on General Ambrose Burnside’s staff. Rising steadily, he was promoted to captain and aide-de-camp of the 9th Corps, breveted major, and ultimately breveted lieutenant colonel before resigning on 3 July 1865.
This cot, marked with Goddard’s name and associated with his service on Burnside’s staff, is a rare surviving personal item of field equipment. Such cots would have accompanied senior officers through campaign life.
