Oversize outdoor albumen group portrait. Visible 6 1/2 x 7 in., framed to 11 7/8 x 12 3/8 in.
An Iconic view of a partially-identified group of Union artillerymen and an M1841 six-pound cannon taken in camp. Some of these soldiers were members of Cook's Battery of the 1st Massachusetts Light Artillery, including Corporal Isaac Pierce (far left), who smokes a scarcely seen flexible-stemmed pipe, and Sergeant Charles M. Griffin (fourth from right). The other unidentified soldiers wear a mix of gear and identifying markers; one has a 19th regiment insignia on his shirt, while others sport Co. F and K insignias. The men pose casually around the cannon, which, like them, appears muddy from traversing camp.
This is among the finest images of a Civil War artillery crew ever produced, with outstanding clarity and detail.
