Frederick L. Hitchcock (1837-1924) originally mustered into the 132nd Pennsylvania's Field & Staff in 1862, where he served as a first lieutenant. After participating in the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg, Hitchcock was promoted to major in January 1863. Within a few months he would muster out with the rest of the 132nd, eventually joining the 25th USCT as a lieutenant colonel in January 1864. He was promoted to colonel on 16 November 1864 and continued to serve until he was mustered out on 6 December 1865.
Most notably, Hitchcock penned the book War From the Inside: The Story of the 132nd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in the War for the Suppression of the Rebellion at the beginning of the 20th century. What started as weekly installments in his local newspaper would become a detailed account of Hitchcock's and his peers' experiences as soldiers in the Civil War, spanning from mustering in to mustering out of the 132nd Pennsylvania.
