Two sixth plate ambrotype portraits of Private Henry Melrose, 14th Tennessee Infantry, Company B. Views include:

1: Awesome double-armed view with ludicrously large Bowie knife and revolver. Full leatherette case.

2: Civilian clothes with striped waistcoast, and delicately tinted cheeks Both in pressed paper cases. Half leatherette case.

Private Melrose enlisted on 1 June 1861 and nearly immediately transferred to the Virginia theater where they would remain for the duration of the war, serving with distinction in the Army of Northern Virginia in Archer's famed Tennessee Brigade.

A remarkably hard-fought regiment, they earned a reputation for executing critical counterattacks, preserving Confederate victories at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run (Manassas), and Antietam (Sharpsburg). At Chancellorsville, they seized the critical high ground of Hazel Grove, forcing the Union right wing to fold back upon its center and allowing Lee to reunite his divided forces.

At Gettysburg, the Union Iron Brigade turned Archer's unsupported flank. The 14th Tennessee, having decimated the 2nd Wisconsin,  found itself alone and exposed. On the second day, Lee assigned the remnants of the brigade to join Pickett's Virginia division in an attack on the Union center. They were on Pickett's left and went in at The Angle where they met devastating Union fire. The lost over 58% of the men who entered the battle.

Despite their losses, they continued to serve in the Army of Northern Virginia, seeing more heavy action, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, and more. They surrendered with the rest of the Army at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.

A fine pair of portraits of a soldier from one of the hardest-fought regiments in the Confederacy.
