Full-length studio portrait of William R. Harns. Sixth plate ambrotype. Full thermoplastic case with the "Capture of Major Andre" motif. Period pencil identification to case interior.

Provenance: Herb Peck Collection. This image, along with the entire Herb Peck Collection of historic military photography, was stolen in 1978. This image was recently recovered by law enforcement and is being sold to benefit Peck's family. See Ron Coddington's excellent article for a detailed account of the collection.

An excellent identified image of William R. Harns of the 7th Tennessee Confederate Cavalry. Dressed in a single-breasted cavalry coat with hand-gilt buttons and his hat dangling to his side, Harns stares squarely at the camera with a morose expression. Outstretched in his other arm is a long saber which he grasps at the hilt, pointing the blade towards the ground. A pistol is strapped to his waist by a leather belt.

Mustering into the 7th Tennessee Confederate Cavalry as a private, Harns would serve under both Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry and Jackson's Tennessee Division during the Civil War. While in service, he made several intra-regimental company transfers and was enlisted under companies K, A, and G. The 7th Tennessee Confederate Cavalry served throughout the Western and Trans-Mississippi Theater of the Civil War, acting frequently as a detachment for other armies, including the Army of Tennessee, the Army of the West, and the Army of Trans Mississippi.
