United States Hotchkiss shell. Approx. 2 3/4 (diameter) x 6 3/4 in.

Hotchkiss shells are composed of a cast-iron body and cup divided by a lead band. This example is also outfitted with a time fuze. The shells were painted entirely with a coat of rusty red, then a coat of black, and finally with a white stripe over the lead band. The result in this case is an overall rusted look, though this effect is completely and unnaturally uniform across the trio of metals used.
