High-grade US Model 1850 Staff & Field officer's sword. Chicopee, Massachusetts: Ames Manufacturing Co.
An exemplary example of a high-grade Ames presentation sword in excellent condition. It has a 32", slightly curved, single-edged, spear-point blade with a 22 1/2" stopped median fuller. The overall length is 39". Gilt, cast brass half-basket 1850 Staff & Field Officers pattern guard with "US" in face, single knuckle bow, and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. The grooved wood grip is covered with shagreen and twisted brass wire.
Ricasso etched: "Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass." Blade is acid-etched with cannons, martial themes, and foliate designs, including a spread-winged eagle with a federal shield on the obverse with "E Pluribus Unum" etched above the eagle and "US" etched on the reverse.
Gilt brass-mounted blued steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
Condition: Blade is in very fine to excellent condition with bright polish and lovely frosty etching. Hilt retains gilding and only minor wear to shagreen. Some thinning and losses of bluing to scabbard. One of the best examples we have seen of these desirable swords.
