A large-format oval albumen photograph housed in an elaborately carved period wooden frame with floral motifs. The image depicts ten members of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, posed as a Guard of Honor with their regimental colors crossed behind them. The reverse features an extensive, highly detailed period ink inscription listing the names of the soldiers and officers, accompanied by a photographer's label from Hoag & Quick, No. 100 Fourth St., Cincinnati.
This extraordinary photograph captures a somber and historic moment in the legacy of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (The Bloody Teme). Dated 21 October 1863, the portrait depicts the Guard of Honor and Escort in charge of the remains of Brigadier General William Haines Lytle, who was tragically killed while leading a charge at the Battle of Chickamauga on 20 September 1863.
The 10th Ohio was largely recruited from Irish immigrants in Cincinnati, and Lytle was their beloved first colonel. Following his death, his body was returned to Cincinnati, where this photograph was taken just weeks later. The inscription on the reverse meticulously identifies the men present:
Guard of Honor: Corporal Frederick Englehart (Co. G), Corporal Frederick Blum (Co. I), Private Thomas Dolan (Co. B), Private Egnet Miser (Co. G), Private John S. Pierce (Co. C), and Private John Cunningham (Co. D).
The Escort: Private David Butler (Co. E), Private Frank Sutter (Co. I), Private Patrick Finigan (Co. H), and Private William Sullivan (Co. D).
Officers in Charge: Lieutenant Joseph Donohue and Lieutenant Alfred Pirtle (Aide-de-Camp).
Additional Notation: A separate pencil inscription notes Joseph Guthrie of the Guthrie Grays.
The soldiers are depicted with their muskets, wearing frock coats and fatigue jackets adorned with large, circular breast shields or medals. Crossed behind the squad are the regimental colors, including the national flag and the regimental standard, with "TENTH OHIO" clearly visible on the streamer.
This photograph is an artifact of the highest caliber for collectors of Civil War history. Group portraits of identified guards of honor are exceedingly rare, and the direct association with a fallen general of William H. Lytle's stature provides an elite provenance. The meticulous identification of ten separate enlistees from a famous Irish-heritage regiment offers massive research potential, while the inclusion of the crossed regimental flags makes it visually magnificent. This was one of Rick Carlile's very finest of images.

The albumen print displays excellent contrast, deep tones, and sharp clarity, allowing for individual facial features and the text on the flags to be read clearly. The backing paper on the reverse shows expected age-toning and light staining, but the hand-written ink roster remains entirely dark and legible. The original carved frame is in excellent condition with minor surface wear.
