'B' Co / 70th U.S.C.T" Further inscribed "Jefferson / Cook Co. / Ill." beneath imprint.
Anson Tyler Hemingway (1844-1926) was the paternal grandfather of renowned American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway. Anson is said to have given his grandson Ernest a special tenth birthday present of a 20-gauge shotgun, believed to have sparked the future author’s lifelong hunting pursuits.
Anson was born August 26, 1844 in East Plymouth, Connecticut. In 1854, his family moved to Chicago, and the next decade saw all three enlisted in Union army. Anson Hemingway served first a private with the 72nd Illinois Regiment (known as the Young Men's Christian Association regiment), which was notably engaged at the battle of Vicksburg. He later re-enlisted in Company H, U.S.C.T. 70th Regiment as a first lieutenant and later served as provost marshal of the Freedman's Bureau in Natchez, Mississippi. His two brothers died during the war. Hemingway was mustered out on March 7, 1866 and returned to Illinois, where he attended Wheaton College and worked as general secretary of the Chicago YMCA before establishing a real estate business.
