Solid gold soldier's identification pin. Lot includes original barrel-hinged pin, decorative chain, and safety chain with bent wire pin. Elaborately engraved: "Drum Major. / E.D. Clarrage. / Battery. M. / 1st Mass. / Heavy Artillery. / Lynn. Mass."

One of the most elaborate soldier identification badges we have encountered. Finely engraved, crafted of gold, and fully intact.

Edward D. Clarrage first served with the 3-month 8th Massachusetts Infantry before re-enlisting with the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery as a musician. Evidently talented and hard working, he was promoted to Principal Musician.
