Stamped brass star belt buckle. [Paris, France]: A. Godillot, n.d. Stamped "A. GODILLOT." 2 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. Not in Kerksis or Mullinax.

The same Godillot buckle is illustrated on p. 268 of the 1927 Francis Bannerman & Sons Military Goods Surplus War Equipment catalogue, which describes the plate: "Army Soldier's Belt Buckle sold after the close of the Civil War with captured stores or left over from Blockade Runner Steamer cargo...was adopted by the Confederate soldiers in Texas regiments. " (p. 268).

Manufactured by French military supplier Alexis Godillot (1816-1893), best remembered for his innovative military boot designs. Interestingly, the Federal Government purchased 10,000 uniforms from Godillot in late 1861, which were distributed to the 62nd & 83rd Pennsylvania, 49th & 72nd New York, and 18th Massachusetts Infantries.

A rare and unusual buckle. Although possibly not employed in the field, the known history suggests that they were intended for Texas regiments. A highly presentable example.
