No. 4009 Frozen Soldier. Albumen stereoview from "War Views" series. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., 1865.
A powerful and tragic stereoview presenting an agonizing portrait of Pvt. Benjamin T. Daugherty of Co. K of the 31st Illinois Infantry, who was captured by Confederate forces in Mississippi in February 1864. This kicked off a nightmarish 15 months in southern prisons, from Cahaba to Andersonville to Florence before his release in March 1865. Daugherty became emaciated in these camps and lost both feet below the ankle to exposure. This stereoview depicts him as he was, a man who gave more than seems possible while attempting to hold on to life itself.
An extremely scarce and powerful view, a US revenue stamp on the verso dates this printing to the roughly 1864-1866 period. It remains in excellent condition.
