Horace Porter. Campaigning with Grant. New York: The Century Co., 1897.
8vo. Frontispiece and plates. Original illustrated gilt blue cloth. Ownership inscription to interior front board. FIRST EDITION. Eicher 495; Nevins I, p. 148; Nicholson p. 664
A fine first edition copy of a war memoir by Horace Porter, who was an aide-de-camp to General Grant starting 4 April 1864 and later assisted Grant in writing his memoirs.
Eicher remarks that “the accounts of the emergency operations about Chattanooga, personal recollections of how Grant behaved about camp and headquarters, and lengthy narratives centered on the Richmond and Petersburg operations shine with great luster.”
