.61 smoothbore. 39" barrel. NSN. Oxidized metal previously cleaned to bright, brass furniture, smooth walnut musket stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket with military ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels on the upper barrel band and triggerguard bow and a modern replacement ramrod of the correct pattern. Lock marked "1862/TOWER" with the usual {British Crown} without the letters "VR" at the tail. Breech with Birmingham commercial proofs with the gauge marks of "26" and "25", indicting the barrel was nominally .57 caliber at rough finishing and was .577 after final finishing. A pair of clearly stamped "{Crown}/SH/G1" Confederate Sinclair, Hamilton & Company viewer's marked are present behind the triggerguard.

Variations of this mark with numbers ranging form 1 to 5 are known, with "3" being most common and the numbers "1" and "5" being quire scarce. It is unclear if the number refers to a contract number (at least 5 different contracts for Enfields were entered into by Sinclair, Hamilton & Co with the Confederate central government) or if the numbers refer to inspection teams. What may be rack numbers, a "K" and a "2" are stamped on the stock comb. Overall a decent and well used example of a Confederate imported Enfield Rifle Musket. [ANTIQUE}

Fair to Good. Bore bored out, moderately oxidized and pitted with no rifling. Metal cleaned to bright at some point in the past and now with a mottled appearance with scattered splotches and patches of surface oxidation and age discoloration. Metal with some scattered surface roughness and pitting with the breech area showing moderate to heavy pitting. The barrel bands retain their doughnut shaped screw keepers, which are often missing. Markings in metal remain legible, markings in wood relatively clear as well. Lock is mechanically functional. Wood with moderate wear, a 3" chip missing from the upper edge of the lock mortise, below the bolster and showing numerous bumps, dings and mars from handling and use.
