Quarter plate hand-tinted ambrotype three-quarter-length studio portrait. Full thermoplastic case featuring the Washington Monument in Richmond, Virginia (Berg 1-17S).
A beautifully composed portrait of a Confederate soldier wearing a homemade uniform of broad-wale corduroy or ribbed knit wool. The unknown soldier gazes serenely at the photographer's lens with his hands resting in his lap.
The unusual jacket is clearly homemade, but it is clear that the sewist attempted to replicate a double-breasted uniform jacket with two rows of large buttons and shoulder epaulettes. Deep pockets have also been added to the front, which would have certainly been useful to any soldier at the front.
Housed in the rare and desirable case featuring the Washington Monument in Richmond, Virginia. In pristine condition with high relief.
A treasure for any collectors of non-regulation uniforms.
