Confederate D-guard Bowie knife. N.p., ca. mid-19th century. Approx. 17 1/2 in., blade approx. 11 1/2 in. 

Perhaps the quintessential symbolic Confederate weapon, this D-guard Bowie knife has clearly been well-loved. The blade exhibits a dark patina with pitting and rusting throughout — even the tip has been slightly chipped off. The elongated quillon features a tiny curve at its end, offsetting the large D-guard. The wire on the grip has started to loosen over the decades but remains in place, steadfast for this knife's next owner.
