Deck of lithographed “Union Playing Cards” with original box. New York: American Card Co., 1862. 3 5/8 x 2 1/2 in.
Complete 52-card deck; in variance to a standard 52 card deck, the 4 suits consist of stars and flags, red, and shields and eagles, blue. Furthermore, the ace of eagles bears a unique composition, as the ray-emitting eagle at center sits atop a domed monument surrounded by ribbands reading: "AMERICAN CARD COMPANY / 14 Chambers St / New York."
Generic colonels and majors replace kings and jacks, respectively, while "Goddess[es] of Liberty" stand in place of queens. The art style, evident in the face cards especially, is consistent with the first edition, indicating that these were produced in 1862.
