M1852 naval officer's sword. Solingen, [Germany]: W. Clauberg, n.d. Stamped "W. / Claublrg / Solingen" to the ricasso. Overall approx. 35 1/4 in., blade approx. 29 1/16 in. long.

The blade is clearly and neatly acid-etched with the usual array of motifs, namely a geometric, an anchor and shield, an oval of 13 stars, and a stand of pikes with a flag bearing "USN" to the obverse and an eagle atop a carronade, a fouled anchor, a ribband reading "USN", and a fouled line with oak leaves and acorns to the reverse. Additionally, "Iron Proof" is etched along the spine.

A high quality variation of the standard pattern, with a grip of white shagreen with 12 wraps of triple-strand brass wire, the central strand twisted. Complete in original leather scabbard, to which the topmount is slightly loose but the center mount and pattern dolphin drag are tight. The blade exhibits light wear and is peppered with dark spots, and pattern hilt, with a clearly struck eagle to the pommel cap and a dolphin finial and knucklebow terminal, has taken on a dark patina. The original red felt washer is present. Strong gold gilding is significantly retained by the guard and pommel.
