Autograph document signed by Major Charles M. Hammond, 100th Illinois Infantry. 3 pages, folio, 7 3/8 x 11 3/4 in.
WITH modern enlarged reproduction of Hammond's CDV portrait held at the Illinois State Historical Library. Affixed credit to verso.
A remarkably detailed battle report of the 100th Illinois Infantry during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought on 18-20 September 1863. Addressed to Captain I.G. Edward, the three pages include exacting details beginning with the regiment's position protecting the ford at Lee & Gordon's Mill. What follows is its specific movements, battle details, and regimental losses.
Charles M. Hammond enlisted as a major on 30 August 1862 and was commissioned into the 100th Illinois Infantry. It moved south, skirmishing in Kentucky for most of 1862, before fighting at Bardstown and Stones River, where it was ordered into action, gallantly charging the enemy and holding its ground. More bloody battles followed, including Chickamauga (detailed here), Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain & Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Franklin, and Nashville.
Such complete battle reports of Chickamauga are very scarce.
