Full-length studio portrait albumen CDV. Rockland, Maine: A. J. Pierce, [circa 1862]. Photographer’s imprint to mount verso. Research pencil identifications to mount verso read: "Henry O. Ripley, 4th Maine Inf. / Kearney Cross recipient / Mortally WIA Cold Harbor."

This sharp full-length study captures Henry O. Ripley, a stalwart member of the 4th Maine, a regiment known for its rugged coastal volunteers and fierce fighting record. Ripley is shown in his enlisted man’s frock coat, standing beside a studio balustrade. His youthful but steady expression belies the intense combat experience he would accumulate over three years of service. The portrait was produced in Rockland, Maine, the very heart of the regiment's recruiting ground. The reverse of the mount chronicles a legacy of exceptional bravery followed by final sacrifice in the war's bloodiest month.

Ripley distinguished himself early in the war as one of the elite few chosen to receive the Kearny Cross. This decoration, established in honor of Gen. Philip Kearny, was awarded to enlisted men who demonstrated "meritorious and distinguished" conduct in battle. Ripley’s receipt of this cross marked him as one of the finest soldiers in the division. His service, however, reached its tragic conclusion during the Overland Campaign. At the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864, Ripley was mortally wounded during the desperate frontal assaults against Confederate entrenchments. He died of his wounds shortly thereafter, part of the staggering cost Maine paid during that grueling summer.
