[Stonewall Jackson's Way]. Manuscript document. N.p., n.d. 2 pages, framed to: 15 1/4 x 10 1/4 in.
A fascinating wartime copy of the Confederate marching song, "Stonewall Jackson's Way." A note at the top reveals an intriguing origin: "found on a Rebel Sargent [sic] of old Stonewall Brigade at Winchester,” suggesting that a Union soldier pocketed an original songster from a dead/captured southern soldier and later copied it for posterity or display.
Datelined “Martinsburg, Sept’r 12th ’62,” the song records the charge and resolve of Jackson’s men during the Maryland Campaign.
