Autograph letter signed by William B. Butler. Mount Holly Springs, [Pennsylvania], 29 January 1864. 3 pages, 8vo.
A homefront letter that exemplifies the "Brother Against Brother" experience of many families during the Civil War.
He writes of a visit from his stepbrother: "My Stepbrother Charles Ellsworth came to see us yesterday from Chambersburg, and will remain a few days. He was in the 21st Pa Cavalry. His time is up, and as soon as the Regiment is mustered out of service, he will go to his home in Johnstown, Cambria County. The regiment is lying at Chambersburg. He is not going to re-enlist, as his wife is opposed to it."
He continues to enumerate the many brothers and relatives who have served on both sides of the war: "My friends have been pretty well represented in the army, 1 brother, 1 step brother, 1 brother-in-law, and several nephews. One of my nephews was killed in the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. I have a brother a Colonel in the Rebel Army. His name is Robert Vinton Butler, I have not seen him for 9 years. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky."
An excellent homefront letter.
