Grouping of items belonging to Colonel Henry Wemyss Feilden, including:

 

1. Autograph letter signed by Henry Feilden, giving detailed accounts of his coming to the Confederacy and a 4-page description of his first meeting with "the celebrated Stonewall Jackson". Letter highlights include:

 

  • "since coming into the Confederacy from breaking the Blockade at Charleston (I have tried 3 times and been fired at unmercifully each time...)"
  • "having sailed from Nassau, first impressions of Southern women who from the delicate lady to the hardy peasant wife have all....tilled the field....have clothed the troops....[and] housed them in the hours of sickness..."
  • From the account of the Stonewall Jackson meeting: "the servant came in & took his mattress out of a cupboard & laid it on the floor. [and] as I chose to retire, the Gen said Capt. there is plenty of room on my bed, I hope you will share it with me..?
  • "Jackson is the darling of his men, the pride of them, & they never seem to tire of talking of him....I believe his character like that of Gen. Lee is spotless"

 

2. Manuscript notebook by Feilden, consisting of details of his career in America, meeting his wife, the stillbirth of their child, and his return to England in June 1865 through 1875.

 

3. Feilden family photo album. Photo album features CDVs of Feilden in Confederate Uniform and other notables, including G.S. Nares. 

 

4. Cased daguerreotype of Feilden at age 16 as well as two other cased images.

 

Colonel Henry Wemyss Feilden (1838-1921) was a British Army officer, Confederate Army officer, Arctic Explorer, and naturalist. He was educated at Cheltenham College. At the age of 19, he joined the Black Watch and fought in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny and at the Taku Forts in China in 1860. In 1862, he made it through the blockade to volunteer for the Confederate Army and served as assistant adjutant general with the Army of Tennessee towards the end of the war. After the Civil War, he returned to Britain where he served as a Captain in the Royal Artillery, participating in campaigns in India, South Africa, and China.

Old folds, small area of loss to 3 pages of letter, 5 line note by Feilden added a later date at foot of final page.
