Six pounder solid shot from the Battle of Gettysburg. With custom mount. Manuscript tag on front reads: “Relic of / the Battle of / Gettysburg, PA / Fought July 1-3 1863 / Found wedged in a stone / chimney while tearing / down an old house near / the battlefield in 1920.” Approx. diam. 2 in.
A fine Gettysburg artillery relic with excellent early 20th-century provenance of its “excavation.” This shot was fired by the Branch (North Carolina) Artillery Battery, led by Captain Alexander C. Latham, on Longstreet’s right flank. The battery was armed with one 6-pounder Smoothbore, one 12-pounder Howitzer, and three 12-pounder Napoleons. The Smoothbore and Howitzer would later be replaced with two 10-pounder Parrotts that were captured during fighting at Devil’s Den. The battery fought against Union soldiers until it withdrew on 4 July.
