Oversize albumen print after the artist Friedrich Wilhelm Heine’s concept sketch for a portion of the Battle of Atlantacyclorama. Milwaukee, ca. 1880s. 20 x 13 1/2 in., matted and framed to 28 1/2 x 22 in.
The sketch reproduced here centers on the Troup Hurt House, defended by men of the 10th South Carolina Regiment, while Union forces advance from the right of the frame. Heine’s signature appears at lower right, and the surface bears various notations and numbers serving as directions for the painters who executed the final work.
Friedrich Wilhelm Heine (1845–1921), a German war artist, first gained recognition for his sketches of the Franco-Prussian War. After immigrating to the United States, he settled in Milwaukee and oversaw the execution of major panoramic paintings, including the Battle of Atlanta cyclorama and the Storming of Missionary Ridge.
