Excavated Alabama Volunteer Corps "AVC" belt buckle. Die-stamped brass face, lead-filled. Two brass knobs and 1 hook to reverse. 3 1/2 x 2 in. Gavin 96; Kerksis 334; Mullinax 196
A full-size belt plate to the dimensions specified by the 1850 Ordinance Manual Regulations for rifle troops. Examples of smaller cartridge plates with the same "AVC" device are also known (Gavin 97; Kerksis 333; Mullinax 197-198).
The maker is not recorded in Alabama state records, but Gavin speculates that 3-4 Alabama regiments were equipped with these plates based on the survival rate. (Gavin, p. 136)
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Relics, Militaria, Accouterment, Equipment, Uniforms]
Cracks to edges. Residue, especially to reverse.
