2. Farrugut. Half-length seated studio portrait. Cabinet card. New York: Sarony, ca. 1865. Publisher's imprint to mount recto. Period pencil identification to mount recto. Modern pencil biography to mount verso.
Striking photographs of Farragut in full dress uniform with heavy gold epaulets, ornate belt plate, gold sleeve lace, and officer's sword.
A superb visual tribute to David Glasgow Farragut (1801–1870), the U.S. Navy's first rear admiral, vice admiral, and full admiral, best remembered for his daring victories at New Orleans and Mobile Bay ("Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"). The wartime CDV captures Farragut following his early river campaigns, while Napoleon Sarony's dramatic, large-format cabinet portrait presents the mature hero in full ceremonial regalia toward the culmination of his illustrious naval career. A strong pair of images of an American Naval legend.

Very good condition overall. The Brady CDV exhibits crisp focus, and a clean mount with intact borders. The Sarony cabinet card features sharp clarity throughout, and a flat, sturdy mount with faint age toning.
