A distinct specialized grouping of 5 period albumen CDVs documenting the medical officers of the Union Army. [ca. 1861–1865]. This collection features surgeons from prominent Western and New England units, showcased through a variety of high-quality full-length and seated sittings. These images provide a detailed survey of the specialized uniforms and professional bearing of the men responsible for the health of the volunteer regiments.

This lot contains 5 surgeon CDVs, including:

1. Unidentified Surgeon (Top Left): A full-length study by W. L. Germon’s Atelier in Philadelphia. The officer is depicted in a frock coat and kepi, resting his hand on a studio pedestal. While the subject is currently unknown, he projects a very high-status persona.

2. Surgeon Elmore Y. Chase (Top Right): An identified portrait of a veteran Western Theater medical officer. Chase served with the 13th Ohio through the grueling campaigns of the Army of the Cumberland, including the battles of Shiloh, Stones River, and Chickamauga.

3. Surgeon in Sack Coat (Bottom Left): An interesting study of a medical officer in a functional sack coat, standing beside an ornate studio chair. This less formal attire is often associated with active field service in the camps.

4. Unidentified Surgeon (Bottom Center): A standing portrait by Prescott & Gage of Hartford, Connecticut. This officer is shown in a sharp frock coat and kepi, with the distinct green silk sash of the medical staff clearly visible.

5. Surgeon "David" (Bottom Right): A top-shelf seated study against a scenic forest backdrop. This card features a personal period inscription on the reverse: "To Sister Bessie from / David / Dixon, July 6th / 62." The informal identification and specific dating provide an excellent starting point for genealogical research. We note that Dixon, Illinois was a major training center for a significant number of Illinois regiments.

Featuring an identified veteran of the Western Theater and a rare dated personal inscription, this lot offers a poignant and researchable look into the lives of the men who staffed the Union's field hospitals.
