Although regimental and even company nicknames were not uncommon, few were so inextricable as the 7th Ohio "Roosters". The soldiers of the 7th wore rooster badges like this example, a rooster features prominently on their memorial at Gettysburg, and, purportedly, Colonel William Creighton (1837-1863) would lead the men in a rooster's crow before battle.
