Civil War regulation copper bugle. Attributed to the 71st Ohio Infantry. Single twist with brass floating rim around the bell. Approx. 17 in. from mouthpiece to bell. Bell diam. approx. 5 in.
A Civil War period bugle attributed to the 71st Ohio Infantry (see photographed provenance). The regiment was organized in September 1861 at Troy, Ohio, and mustered in for three years of service beginning in February 1862. The 71st saw action at Shiloh, participated in the Atlanta Campaign, and later fought at Nashville. Although each company was allotted only a small number of musicians, the specific individual who carried this bugle is not currently known.
The instrument retains its original patina and exhibits dents and wear consistent with period use, suggesting actual field service.
