A collection of six (6) tintype portraits of Civil War soldiers. Views include:

1. Sixth plate half-length studio portrait. Full leatherette case with duct tape repair.

Born in 1849, Alfred J. Shaw of the 10th Michigan Volunteers was no older than 16 when this photograph was struck. The boy soldier mustered into Company H of the regiment as a private at age 12 or 13 in 1862. Despite sporting an oversized uniform, he wears a look of pride and determination. He would receive a promotion to corporal before mustering out with the regiment. A pencil identification can be found inside the case behind the image.

2. Ninth plate half-length studio portrait. Full leatherette case.

A portrait of a forage cap-clad Confederate soldier holding a sidehammer revolver in his hand. His coat buttons and cap buckle have been gold gilt, and his cheeks hand tinted.

3. Ninth plate half-length studio portrait. Full thermoplastic case.

Another armed soldier, this time a Yankee cavalryman who presents an impressive Colt revolver to the camera. Gold gilding has been applied to his buttons, m1851 belt plate, and details of the gun, though the eagle to the belt plate is still clearly visible. A modern identification in the form of a pink paper scrap taped to the glass reads: "Noah Helm / Wife Cousin / of Alice Markley Schauweker". A Noah Helm, whose wife Sarah Jane was cousin to an Alice Markley Schauweker, served with Company L of the 10th Ohio Cavalry; due to the relative obscurity of Markley Schauweker, this information was likely written or related by a descendant.

4. Quarter plate full-length studio portrait. Full thermoplastic case.

The lanky subject casts a long shadow on the painted backdrop of a camp scene behind him. He wears an unpinned Hardee hat and a frock coat with gold-gilt buttons. His cheeks have been delicately tinted with the same hue as the flag behind him. The backdrop itself, with a billowing flag, cannon, mortar (beneath mat), gabions, and a gunboat to the left of the composition, and a tent, stacked rifles, a cartridge box with letters "USA" to its flap, and other accouterments to its right, is one of two nearly identical backdrops used by St. Louis photographer Stephen Evans at Benton Barracks. Housed in a Berg 1-67S "Liberty" case.

5. Sixth plate full-length seated studio portrait. Half leatherette case.

A portrait of a bearded soldier striking a relaxed pose, leaning one arm on a small table next to him. The image exhibits incredible clarity despite cracking to its emulsion. Under extreme magnification, the buttons to the sitter's sack coat and vest appear to bear federal eagles.

6. Sixth plate half-length studio portrait. Half leatherette case.

While his jacket looks to be civilian in nature, the buttons to the young subject's vest bear devices reminiscent of the military issued buttons of the day. These devices remain ambiguous under magnification.
